Poliovirus found in sewage samples from Pakistan's KP and Sindh provinces

Third positive environmental sample for Wild Poliovirus Type- 1( WPV1) found in DI Khan, Pakistan in 2023. Ghotki environmental sample reveals detection of Vaccine- Derived Poliovirus Type- 3 in Pakistan.

Pakistan detects Wild Poliovirus Type- 1 and Vaccine- deduced Poliovirus Type 3 in environmental samples

Pakistan’s National Polio Laboratory has verified the detection of Wild Poliovirus Type- 1( WPV1) and Vaccine- Derived Poliovirus Type 3( VDPV3) in environmental samples collected from Dera Ismail Khan and Ghotki district.

WPV1 detected in Dera Ismail Khan

According to The News, WPV1 was detected in an environmental sample collected from Dera Ismail Khan on February 21, 2023, from the Paroa environmental sample collection point. This is the first positive sewage sample from the aboriginal zone of Southern KP collected this time and the third positive environmental sample found in Pakistan in 2023.

Although no mortal Polio case has been reported from the quarter since December 2019, the new positive environmental sample is genetically linked to the poliovirus detected in the same district in November 2022. The last polio vaccination campaign in the district was conducted on February 13- 17, 2023.

VDPV3 detected in Ghotki

On the other hand, VDPV3 was detected in an environmental sample collected from quarter Ghotki on February 14, 2023, from the Bago Wah environmental sample collection point. This is the first discovery of VDPV3 in the country this time, with 11 nucleotides different from the reference sabin strain. The last polio vaccination crusade in the quarter was held from January 16 to 20 this time.

Response to detections

Polio eradication teams in both sections, in support and guidance from the National and Provincial Emergency Operation Centers( EOCs), are working to respond to the detections. The polio vaccination crusade inmid-March in Punjab, Sindh, and Islamabad and in the first week of April in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan will use bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine, which is very effective against both types of Polioviruses.

Concerns raised by the Global Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication

The Global Commission for the instrument of Poliomyelitis Eradication( GCC) raised enterprises over failings in surveillance performance, particularly the punctuality of discovery and quality of environmental surveillance in some points, during their recent meeting in Jordan to review progress towards interrupting WPV1 transmission in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The commission reiterated the significance of environmental surveillance as a supplement to Acute Flaccid Paralysis( AFP) surveillance and recommended that farther analysis be conducted into ES system performance, with updates handed to the group on a biannual basis.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the recent detection of Wild Poliovirus Type- 1( WPV1) and Vaccine- Derived Poliovirus Type 3( VDPV3) in environmental samples from Dera Ismail Khan and Ghotki districts, respectively, highlights the ongoing challenges in eradicating polio in Pakistan. Despite no mortal Polio case reported in DI Khan since December 2019, the detection of WPV1 underscores the need for uninterrupted sweats in surveillance, discovery, and response. The discovery of VDPV3 also underscores the need for harmonious vaccination juggernauts and sweats to improve vaccination content in high- threat areas. The Global Commission for the instrument of Poliomyelitis Eradication( GCC) raised enterprises over the quality of environmental surveillance in some points, highlighting the significance of ongoing sweats to improve surveillance and monitoring. It's imperative that Pakistan continues to work towards achieving polio eradication, and ongoing efforts in vaccination campaigns and surveillance are pivotal in achieving this goal.

Efforts should be made for the eradication of Poliomyelitis

Article 1: Increasing Vaccination Coverage to Eradicate Polio in Pakistan

Pakistan is one of only two countries in the world where Polio remains aboriginal. Despite significant progress made in recent times, the recent discovery of Wild Poliovirus Type- 1( WPV1) and Vaccine- deduced Poliovirus Type 3( VDPV3) in environmental samples from Dera Ismail Khan and Ghotki sections highlights the need for uninterrupted sweats in eradicating polio.

One of the most effective ways to annihilate polio is through vaccination juggernauts. still, achieving high vaccination content in remote and high- threat areas has proven grueling in Pakistan. To step up sweats towards polio eradication, it's pivotal to increase vaccination content in these areas. This can be achieved through a combination of community engagement, mindfulness juggernauts, and bettered access to healthcare.

To increase community engagement, original leaders, religious leaders, and community influencers can be engaged to promote the significance of polio vaccination. mindfulness juggernauts can also be launched to inform people about the benefits of vaccination and the pitfalls of not vaccinating their children. perfecting access to healthcare installations in remote and high- threat areas is also cruciall to increase vaccination content.

By increasing vaccination coverage, Pakistan can significantly reduce the risk of polio outbreaks and move closer towards eradicating polio.

Article 2: Strengthening Surveillance and Monitoring to Eradicate Polio in Pakistan

The recent discovery of Wild Poliovirus Type- 1( WPV1) and Vaccine- deduced Poliovirus Type 3( VDPV3) in environmental samples from Dera Ismail Khan and Ghotki sections highlights the significance of surveillance and monitoring in eradicating polio in Pakistan.

To annihilate polio, it's pivotal to have a robust surveillance system in place to descry and respond to polio cases. still, the quality of environmental surveillance in some points has been raised as a concern by the Global Commission for the instrument of Poliomyelitis Eradication( GCC).

To step up sweats towards polio eradication, it's essential to strengthen surveillance and monitoring systems in high- threat areas. This can be achieved through a combination of increased investment in surveillance structure, capacity structure for surveillance labor force, and the use of advanced technologies similar as real- time monitoring systems.

In addition, it's pivotal to ameliorate collaboration between different stakeholders involved in polio eradication sweats, including government agencies, healthcare providers, and transnational associations.

This can help insure that surveillance and monitoring sweats are integrated and effective. By strengthening surveillance and monitoring systems, Pakistan can more descry and respond to polio outbreaks, eventually moving near towards eradicating polio.
